President Obama has expressed sorrow saying that the incident left him “heartbroken.” However, President of Afghanistan Hamid Karzai still maintains an unforgiving attitude, most recently citing America’s lack of “cooperation.”
The Afghan population has shown their disapproval through strong protests. CNN reported one unidentified villager’s reaction to America’s attempt to compensate for the soldier’s actions saying:
“Now the Americans are offering us money. I don’t want money. I want justice.”
Many Afghans are demanding that Robert, who was flown to Kansas a couple days ago, be brought back to Afghanistan and tried under their justice system.
There has been speculation of whether or not a mental disability or even drunkenness led Robert to commit these murders he is suspected of.
Since the rampage, Karzai has been forceful in his desire for the United States to leave their outposts. He described the relationship between Afghanistan and the United States as “the end of the rope.”
