The reign of Lady Gaga continues as she’s racked up 13 MTV Video Music Awards nominations and dons the cover Vanity Fair next month. She’s created a fan base of ‘little monsters’ who put their ‘paws’ up for her any chance they get. With over a million albums sold and a crazy outfit to match each of them, Gaga is like no one else in the music industry. Try to describe Lady Gaga in one word, and you probably can’t. But as a fan, sometimes I want to see more of Stefani Germanotta (her birthname) and less of Lady Gaga.

The song that inspired her name, Radio Ga Ga by Queen, describes what I’m trying to say. ‘Like all good things on you we depend. So stick around cause we might miss you. When we grow tired of all this visual. You had your time you had the power”. Though the song is referring to the growth of radio at the time, sometimes I feel like this about Gaga. She has so much potential but it’s hard for me to get past the red lace costume sometimes.

I am goo goo for Gaga like the rest of the world, but when it comes to music is there such a thing as too much? I find myself more frustrated than amused when I read an interview where she doesn’t answer the question and just says something out of this world. Can an artist go overboard? I see potential in her and I’m always left wanting more than her mouse voice saying whatever comes to mind first. None of this is to discredit Gaga for anything but there is a thin line between creative and distracting, and sometimes Gaga crawls on it. Andre 3000 is the perfect example of someone who has channeled their creativity throughout his solo carrer and with OutKast.

Maybe I’m asking for too much when I ask that Lady Gaga show me what’s underneath the persona. It’s always interesting to know what goes on when the spotlight shuts off. I can only imagine what this years MTV performance will be like after last years blood-filled show. But I would love to see what Stefani can do, the real Lady Gaga.
