A Hillsborough County inmate now faces two additional felony charges after he lunged for an officer’s gun while he was awaiting a court hearing, authorities said.

Robert Lewis Bridges III, 24, was wearing leg shackles, handcuffs and a wait chain as he waited for his case to be called inside Circuit Judge Martha Cook’s courtroom Tuesday morning, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.

Officer Tracey Wallace said she noticed the guy focusing in on her gun belt, which set off warning signs. When Bridges lunged for the gun, Wallace created distance between them while two additional officers restrained him. Their struggle lasted just a few moments and luckily, no one was injured.

“My heart was pounding for probably about a good hour but I kept my composure and stayed calm and didn’t panic. He was studying me, he was studying my equipment that I wore and my training kicked in,” said officer Wallace.

Wallace was wearing a very tight retention holster, making it very difficult for anyone to remove her gun.

A similar case also took place in Boston recently, when a prisoner was being taken to the hospital by a deputy. The prisoner got a hold of the deputy’s gun, forcing a second deputy to shoot the prisoner in the chest. He is now in critical condition in the hospital.

We’re just wondering, what did Bridges plan on doing with that gun?
