Breed of Cockroach Comes To New York, Can Survive Brutal Winter!
Oh Hell, No! New Breed Of Cockroach Comes To NYC, Can Survive Brutal Winters (PHOTOS)
It looks like New Yorkers may have another worry on top of the harsh winter ahead.
A recent discovery by Rutgers University insect biologists Jessica Ware and Dominic Evangelista have found the Periplaneta japonica cockroach, from Asia, growing in population in Manhattan’s Chelsea area.
Periplaneta japonica has special powers not seen in the local roach population; it can survive outdoors in the freezing cold.
According to the Daily Mail, the Periplantea breed was found at the new High Line Park, a growing tourist attraction. Evangelista isn’t worried about the new discovery however, with competition from the rodents that already reside in the big city, reproduction is less of a possibility.
‘Because this species is very similar to cockroach species that already exist in the urban environment,’ Evangelista said, ‘they likely will compete with each other for space and for food.’ That competition, Ware said, will likely keep the population low, ‘because more time and energy spent competing means less time and energy to devote to reproduction.’
The breed is known to adapt easily to cold climates, but Evangelista isn’t sure how it will do in the “dirty New York snow.”
The good news? Doesn’t look like these new pests will take over the city, per se. But the bad news? Those cat-sized rodents are probably going to be a little fatter this year with all the new snacks crawling around.
Just awesome.
