There were a ton of good movies this year, Marshall, Justice League, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, and Mother, a movie which was a metaphor for the bible. That’s creative. I didn’t even mention Logan, Spider-Man: Homecoming, It or Split a few other movies I loved this year.
Despite all the great moments at the theater, none of those movies made my top 10 list for 2017. After a lot of hard decisions and debates here are my top movies of the year.
10. Wonder Woman
Let me start by saying I think Justice League was a solid win for Warner Bros. The MVP award should go to Patty Jenkins and Wonder Woman. This film was a great reset for the DCEU to start racking up wins. Gal Gadot is phenomenal.
9. John Wick 2
I think Keanu Reeves as John Wick is better than Neo in the Matrix. It’s that simple. Add in Common and my guy Laurence Fishburn and this is sadly one of the best films of the year.
8. Girl’s Trip
I haven’t seen this movie on enough lists. It’s funny AF, made over 100 million at the box office and it stars Tiffany Haddish, who became a megastar off of her performance. Why? Because it’s one of the best movies of the year.
7. War For The Planet of The Apes
Never thought I would be as emotional over the death of an ape. I ain’t cry when Harambe died. *Wipes tears away* Excellent job at storytelling.
6. Baby Driver
One of the best opening scenes in movie history. The concept of this film is superb. Every action is set to music and Jamie Foxx is a great psychopath.
5. Wonder
4. The Big Sick
This Movie is good and if you didn’t get a chance to see it, star and writer Kumail Nanjiani let us all know it’s available for free on PornHub under interracial. No, it’s not a porn but you should definitely watch it under “interracial.”
3. 3 Billboards Outside of Ebbing Missouri
The name of this movie sounds wild. But this movie about 3 billboards in Missouri is actually a dope tale of race, injustice and a woman wanting her lockable sheriff to do his job.
2. Get Out
A great concept because we always knew who the real boogie man was and Jordan Peele captures it perfectly in Get Out. White men stealing Black bodies to become better at this thing call life. Just imagine.
1. Mudbound
Dee Rees has been touted as the next Black Woman director to win an Oscar. Mudbound is currently streaming on Netflix and if you haven’t watched it you should. Mary J Blige and Jason Mitchell as amazing in this film. The acting, the story the direction. Everything about this film is great.
