When it comes to film and television, the past few years have been full of firsts. Despite it being 2017, there are still some awards that black people are finally receiving. Let’s take a look back at just some of the history that’s been made in recent years.

In 2015, Viola Davis became the first African-American woman to win an Emmy for Outstanding Actress in a Drama Serie for her role in How To Get Away With Murder. In 2017, Viola became the first African American ever to win an Oscar, an Emmy, and a Tony in a competitive acting category.
