This weekend ended one of the biggest independent film festivals in the world, the Sundance Film Festival.
Everything from comedies to political dramas made an appearance at the 10-day long event and hopefully we can expect their release sometime this year.
Some recognizable stars were definitely there to rep their movies. Swipe through to check out eight flicks we think should be on your radar and the talent that’s bringing them to life!
Come Sunday starring Chiwetel Ejiofor
An out of competition film, this Netflix movie follows Bishop Carlton Pearson, a mega preacher who changes his fundamentalist gospel after his uncle’s suicide and reports of the Rwandan genocide. The movie is set to premiere on Netflix April 13!
Sorry to Bother You starring Lakeith Stanfield, Tessa Thompson, and Terry Crews
In this comedic satire, Stanfield plays a rising telemarketer who is split between loyalty to his co-workers and rising up the corporate ladder. With hints of magical realism and critiques on everything from capitalism to racism in America, this is sure to bring people to the theatre!
Blindspotting starring Daveed Diggs and Rafael Casal
Daveed Diggs plays a guy waiting to serve out his last days of probation for a crime he’s desperate to put behind him. However, a missed curfew results in a chain of events that tests his relationship with a troubled childhood friend. This film already snagged a distribution deal with Lionsgate, so you can definitely watch out for it when it hits theaters in the near future!
Monsters and Men starring Kelvin Harrison Jr., Anthony Ramos and Rob Morgan
When a police officer wrongfully guns down a neighborhood street hustler, a story unfolds through the lives of three characters — the man who filmed the shooting, a Black cop who’s the colleague of the shooter, and a star high school athlete who is transformed by the incident.
Tyrel starring Jason Mitchell
Being hailed as the Get Out of 2018, Tyrel follows a Black guy who joins a friend for a getaway weekend with people he doesn’t know. Soon Tyrel realizes he’s the only Black guy in the group and with the help of alcohol and testosterone, things quickly turn into a nightmare.
A Boy. A Girl. A Dream. starring Meagan Good and Omari Hardwick
On the night of the 2016 presidential elections, an L.A. club promoter goes on a thrilling and emotional journey with a Midwestern visitor. The visitor challenges the promoter to revisit his lost dreams, while the promoter pushes the visitor to discover hers.
Skate Kitchen starring Rachelle Vinberg and Jaden Smith
A naive young skater joins and all-girls skate group and is exposed to the thrills of big city skate life. However, her friendship with the girls is tested when she befriends a guy from a rival skate group. With Jaden smith and a cast of great up-and-coming talent, this could definitely be the teen drama of 2018.
The Miseducation of Cameron Post starring Chloë Grace Moretz and Sasha Lane.
This flick took home the coveted U.S. Grand Jury Prize for a drama at the film festival. It tells the story of a high school girl who’s sent to conversion therapy camp after she’s caught with another girl on prom night. With themes of LGBT identities and finding community, it’s sure to hit at the hearts of various viewers!
