This past weekend Killer Mike caused a wave of controversy when he did an interview with NRA TV advocating gun ownership and condemning the school walkouts over gun control.
He immediately faced backlash for doing the interview, especially since the National Rifle Association (NRA) has been notoriously silent on what it means to be a Black gun owner.
Eventually, Mike posted two videos apologizing for the interview, saying he supports the March For Our Lives and only wanted to advocate Black people owning guns.
The whole incident caused fellow rapper Vic Mensa (who performed at March For Our Lives) to speak out on Twitter.

Killer Mike went on to respond.
With gun violence being a major topic in rap music, a debate amongst rhymers wouldn’t be a bad idea.

Chance the Rapper

Along with Vic Mensa, Chance has participated in various political issues, especially when it comes to the local politics of his hometown of Chicago. In a city that’s constantly misrepresented in the media, Chance could bring some much needed perspective to the topic of gun control.
YG

This Compton spitter is unapologetic about his gang affiliation, repping the Bloods in many of his songs and videos. As a victim of gun violence back in 2015, surly YG could give a full story on the power of guns.
Queen Latifah

Most folks know Queen Latifah for her message of U.N.I.T.Y and stopping the violence. But don’t get it twisted, the iconic spitter isn’t necessarily a gun-free champion. Back in ’96 she was booked on a gun possession charge. Not to mention, she’s had multiple family members in law enforcement, including her dad and brother. Her take on the whole gun issue could certainly mixed things up.
Vince Staples

Vince has said multiple times that it’s more to gang life than the media puts on. With stories of being a Crip in his teenage years, and his not-so-fond opinion of the police, Vince would have a lot to say on what kind of guns we should or shouldn’t be allowed to carry.
21 Savage

Another rapper who has an early history with guns, 21 was expelled from school for gun possession in the 7th grade. He then went on to lose friends from gun violence and was shot himself six times. The Georgia spitter could definitely bring a souther perspective to gun talk.
Logic

In recent months, there’s no rapper who’s spoken to the mental health of young people more publicly than Logic. His Grammy nominated song “1-800-273-8255” brought awareness to suicide prevention and Logic even spoke of his struggles with mental health himself. With a nation of young people traumatized by school shootings and neighborhood violence, Logic could offer some insight on handling the issue.
Cardi B

Let’s face it. Cardi B has a lot to say about everything. She’s already expressed how she thinks arming teachers is a bad idea, and in a lot of cases Cardi alway connects her political critiques back to money. Who’s getting paid (or getting rich) off what? With the way Cardi dragged the U.N. over their handling of the Libya slave trade, surely she’ll bring another systematic approach to how guns move throughout the country.
