Cutting ties with somebody can be the worst, especially if there’s feelings involved.
Just ask Drake and Rihanna.
Now I don’t know the full ins and outs of their relationship, but according to Us Weekly, they dated on and off between 2009 and 2016. Drizzy even declared his love for RiRi while presenting her with an award at the 2016 VMAs.
But now it seems there’s trouble in Drizzy and Rihanna land. In a recent interview with Vogue, Rihanna talked about Drake saying, “We don’t have a friendship now, but we’re not enemies either. It is what it is.”
And now, just this week, Drizzy has unfollowed Rihanna on Instagram!
Eesh.
If I know anything about the “unfollow” button, it means you’re officially chop-chopping that relationship that’s causing you pain — or at least, you’re taking a break.
Unfollowing someone can be a hard task, but necessary, so I thought I’d list the five stages of grief for tapping that notorious button. It could very well mean the end of a relationship, but the start of something new.
Swipe through for all the Drake-like feels!
1. Heartbreak
Usually before unfollowing someone, an event went down that made you stop and say “huh?”
Bae cheated.
Someone stood you up at a restaurant.
Your lover can’t give you all that you need right now.
Obviously, the degrees of heartbreak can vary, but there’s definitely something that’s got you in your Nothing Was The Same feelings.
2. Denial
Maybe it’s you and not them.
Maybe they’ll change.
That one thing isn’t worth breaking off the whole relationship, right?
It’ll all be fine.
3. Timeline jealousy
Just when you think you can make amends, that lover pops up in your IG feed. And who is this they’re with?
SOMEONE THAT’S NOT YOU.
How dare they spend time with this basic person, but not you.
Heck, they can be by themselves having a good time and you’re pissed off because they’re not having a good time with you!
4. Reality check
Okay, you’re a crazy person now. Your emotions are all over the place and now you gotta be more conscious of your actions.
How many times a day do you go on this person’s page?
Are they getting in the way of work, school or other important aspects of your life?
How long can you really handle these roller coaster of emotions?
5. Unfollow (a.k.a. “The Axe”)
This person is affecting your mental and emotional health, and now might be the time to refocus on yourself.
Reconnect with friends.
Refocus on your career.
See a therapist.
Whatever you need to do to cut the negative stimuli and get your life in order…it can all go down with the “Unfollow” button.
It might take time to get over this person, but find that light on the other side and make the moves forward.
You deserve it.
