For two seasons, Desus Nice and The Kid Mero have provided comedic relief to the everyday shenanigans of the world on their Viceland show Desus & Mero.
In a Trump era where politics are getting more ridiculous, and in a viral culture where hilarious clips can go from zero to a hundred, Desus and Mero give commentary that mirrors an audience rarely represented.
The two guys from the Bronx went from Twitter, to runs on MTV, to Viceland with a brand that was funny and relatable — like sitting in a room with your cousins for a good roast.
Now, they are making yet another move by leaving their show on Viceland and going to Showtime for a new weekly dive into late-night television. It’s possible, the two will bring the same fun from their Viceland show. But just in case they decide to switch up, we’ve decided to highlight some of the best features that made Desus & Mero one of the best shows on late-night television. Swipe through to reminisce on the hype!
1. The fresh gear
First thing’s first — while other late-night hosts might clean up well in a suit and tie, it’s nothing like peeping Desus and Mero’s gear for your everyday style inspiration. The looks are so hot that an Instagram account was even started, solely dedicated to Desus and Mero’s shoe game!
2. The lingo
If you’re not from the New York metropolitan area and come for a visit, words like “b” and “deadass” can feel like they have an expiration date from overuse. But with the homey vibes Desus and Mero provide on their show, you’ll find yourself turning into a bodega hopping, Yankees loving ally who might unintentionally utter “b” when you least expect it.
Add in Mero’s mantras like “suck my d*ck from the back”, or Desus’ warnings of people “talking spicy,” and you’ve got a whole language that’s snuck into your lexicon.
What can you say…the brand is strong.
3. Actually interesting interviews with politicians
Let’s face it, political talk can be dry as toast, especially if the person moderating the discussion doesn’t look like you. However, watching two Bronx-bred Bodega Boys interview U.S. senators like Kirsten Gillibrand with humor and integrity could spark a much needed interest in politics.
4. The completely random set design.
Huge bear in the background rocking a New York Yankees hat? Check.
An extremely low chandelier that looks like a safety hazard? Check.
…feels like home.
5. Hilarious commentary on animal sex
Desus and Mero give commentary on a lot of viral videos, but they’re probably at their best when they discuss animal loving. All your adolescent immaturity is satisfied when Desus and Mero provide hilarious voiceovers!
6. Sonic rings
Who doesn’t like good sound effects when you witness something silly in a street brawl or clumsy encounter. Desus and Mero provided those effects with the devastating Sonic the Hedgehog rings you lose in a game. An epic fall becomes that much more tragic.
7. Rainbow love
At the end of each show, illustrious guests get to make a statement that magically appears via a rainbow over their head. Their words have ranged from funny, to “spicy,” to just plain random. But some of the best ones have been nothing short of inspirational.
Hopefully, we’ll get that same energy in the Showtime episodes to come!
