HBOs Insecure Block Party

This week’s episode was titled “Fresh-Like” and that’s literally all it was about. From a fresh new man and a fresh new apartment to a fresh new job, everything in Issa’s life is becoming real “fresh-like.” This episode’s soundtrack was pretty fresh too. To welcome the reintroduction of Issa’s party bus passenger, Nathan, and the exit of Issa from her job at We Got Yall, we were laced with some dope mid-tempo tunes to get us through the week.

Kali Uchis ft. Tyler The Creator & Bootsy Collins – “After The Storm”

“After The Storm” off of Kali Uchis’ Isolation album features the unlikely pairing of Tyler the Creator and Bootsy Collins. The song and video came out earlier this year. Kali Uchis got the Bootsy feature thanks to social media. Back in 2015, she did an interview with Billboard saying that she’s always wanted to work with him and that she followed him on Twitter but he never followed back. Days after the interview, Bootsy responded to Kali and they ended up working together at Bootsy’s ranch. They’ve since released two songs together.

Nao ft. SiR – “Make It Out Alive”

Insecure introduced us to a new one. “Make It Out Alive” by Nao, featuring SiR of TDE came out less than a week ago. From East London to Inglewood, this is a match made in heaven.

OverDoz. – “Manifesto”

“Manifesto” appears on OverDoz.’s “2008” album which came out last year. OverDoz. hails from Crenshaw so it makes perfect sense why they would be featured on Insecure. Fun fact, the cover of “2008” was taken outside of Worldwide Tacos in Crenshaw. Worldwide Tacos was also featured in the episode of Insecure featuring their track. Could this have been intentional?

03 Greedo – “Basehead”

03 Greedo is currently serving some time in jail but his music is still enjoying freedom. “Basehead” was released just this summer, despite the fact Greedo, also an LA native, may not see the outside of a cell for another 10-20 years.

Ravyn Lenae – “Closer (Ode 2 U)”

Ravyn Lenae must be a favorite amongst the Insecure crew. She not only made a musical appearance in tonight’s episode but also ushered in the first episode of the season.

Blackparty – “Summer Love”

This track was the perfect song to play while Issa and her new boy toy were skinny dipping in a stranger’s backyard. “Summer Love” appears on Blackparty’s 2016 album, “Mango,” and it’s good for every summer, every year.

TT The Artist ft. Shiftee – “Fall Back”

TT The Artist told us this song was coming two days ago. “Fall Back” can’t be found anywhere online and is likely to be an original cut from the Insecure soundtrack. TT The Artist also appears on another song on the Insecure soundtrack — Childish Major’s “Ho For It,” which also features Dreezy & Cam & China.

Nstasia – “Trap or Die”

“Trap Or Die” appears on Nstasia’s EP, “New Religion” and for a split second, almost sounds like Meek Mill’s Dreams And Nightmares (Intro).

Mahalia – “Sober (Jarreau Vandal Remix)”

The original version of “Sober” can be found here. Last year, Dutch Producer Jarreau Vandal laced Mahalia with a pretty nice mix that unbeknownst to them, would land on Insecure. Mahalia is currently embarking on an Autumn tour. She’s performed dates in Toronto, Brooklyn, LA and San Fran and will be heading back to the UK in October.

Janelle Monae – “I Like That”

“I Like That” was the perfect way to end this episode because frankly, we liked that. We liked the episode, we liked the new love interest and we like Janelle Monae. “I Like That” appears on Janelle Monae’s “Dirty Computer” album which dropped earlier this year.
