If you’re caught up on Insecure and was already planning a “Team Nathan” fan club, then the latest episodes probably left your feelings in shambles (episode seven spoilers below).
Nathan (played by Kendrick Sampson) is STILL nowhere to be found!
By the end of episode six, Issa’s new potential bae pretty much ghosted her, but there was still a thread of hope that he might show up in episode seven.
Nope.
The man is one episode away from becoming an urban legend once the season ends next week. Issa spent all of episode seven going through the horrible emotions that come with being ghosted (similar to the “7 Stages of Grief When You Get Ghosted” that we covered right here on Global Grind).
Eventually, by the end of episode seven, Issa seems to make peace with the idea that Nathan won’t be returning to her life. But inquiring minds still want to know…
WTF happened to Nathan?!
Thanks to some hints put forth in past episodes, I’ve decided to do some thorough investigating on what could have happened to our green-eyed mystery man.
Hit the next pages to check out three theories behind Nathan’s disappearing act!
Theory #1: Nathan is undocumented
Remember that Nathan went missing in action when Issa texted him about an investigation Lyft was doing. Back in episode one, Nathan threw hands with a rude customer Issa and Molly were driving. The man Nathan punched could have pressed charges and gotten the police involved. If Nathan was an undocumented immigrant, this could have meant trouble for him.
Also, remember in episode four Nathan said he moved to L.A. from Houston, Texas after a hurricane destroyed his place. Though undocumented immigrants reside in various parts of the U.S., Houston is one of the cities listed by Time last year as having the most undocumented immigrant population. L.A. is the city that has the second largest population behind New York.
Since Issa was the driver in the Lyft investigation, any contact with her could potentially threaten Nathan’s resident status, therefore he still might be active on social media, but his relationship with Issa had to end.
Theory #2: Nathan sells drugs
This one is a bit of a stretch, but you might remember in episode five how everyone took Molly at Coachella. While Nathan’s friends were willing and ready to take the drug, Nathan showed some initial restraint.
Possibly a dealer who didn’t want to use his own product?
Eventually, Nathan took the drug along with Issa, but the whole scene does make you wonder how much drugs play a part in Nathan’s life. Some prior run-ins with the law definitely could have kept him away from Issa and this whole Lyft investigation.
Theory #3: Nathan is just trash
At the end of the day, Nathan can literally just be the worst kind of potential bae — the hit it and quit it, the non-communicator, the running scared when things get too deep.
This arguably could be worse than being undocumented or having a drug record because then it’ll have Issa questioning herself and her insecurities even more.
Many of us have dealt with trash lovers before (or been the trash lover ourselves). In this case, Issa was right to move on by episode seven.
Sayonara Nathan!
…maybe.
