On March 30, 2019, everyone will be tuned in to TV One live to watch some of our favorite actors, musicians, films and more receive much needed honors from the African American community they’ve uplifted and inspired. For the first time ever, the telecast will take place from the Dolby Theater in Hollywood, California which is the perfect place to celebrate the amazing films that came out in 2018.
This year, so many of our favorite films and TV shows have been nominated for some great awards. If you’ve been living under a rock for the last year, don’t worry, we can help you catch up before you tune in for the ceremony when it airs in the upcoming weeks. Here are some film and television shows that garnered nods this season. We suggest you should check them out because they’re all worth a watch.
This Is Us

“This Is Us”, which airs Tuesdays on NBC, is about triplet siblings, two biological and one adopted, navigating their very different, and dramatic, lives after they lost their father as pre-teens. Randall, played by Sterling K. Brown, was abandoned at a fire station by his father as an infant and is the smartest child of the family. He grows up to become a stylish New York-based businessman working to raise two daughters and foster child with his wife, Beth. “This Is Us” is one television show that is guaranteed to make you cry every single time.

BlacKkKlansman

John David Washington stars in the Spike Lee and Jordan Peele film, “BlacKkKlansman”. The film is based on the story of Ron Stallworth, the first African American detective to serve in the Colorado Springs Police Department. Ron is determined to make a name for himself so he bravely sets out on a dangerous mission to infiltrate and expose the Ku Klux Klan. With the help of his colleague, Flip Zimmerman he sets up the undercover investigation of a lifetime.
The Chi

Everyone is patiently awaiting the second season of “The Chi” on Showtime. Created by Lena Waithe, “The Chi” is about the daily dangers of the South Side of Chicago and how the smallest and simplest decisions can have life or death consequences for the residents. The show follows a group of grade school kids and young adults in the area that are trying to scrape a living for themselves, while the elders sit on their front porches and observe the goings on. It’s a beautifully made television show that will draw you in from the first episode. The show’s second season returns to Showtime on April 7th.
If Beale Street Could Talk
“Moonlight” director Barry Jenkins dropped another amazingly Black film that is destined to become one of our most talked about classics. “If Beale Street Could Talk” takes place in early 1970s Harlem. Daughter and wife-to-be Tish vividly recalls the passion, respect, and trust that connected her and her artist fiancé Alonzo Hunt, who goes by the nickname Fonny. Friends since childhood, the devoted couple dream of a future together, but their plans are derailed when Fonny is arrested for a crime he did not commit. Throughout the film, Tish tries desperately to free Fonny before the birth of their first child. It’s a film about love and resilience and it’s shot beautifully.
Power
If you’re late to the “Power” wave, it’s not too late to hop on. Heading into its sixth season on Starz, “Power” follows drug kingpin and businessman, James “Ghost” St. Patrick as he tries to juggle running a drug empire, a nightclub business, a family of five and a romantic affair with the assistant DA. Power” is co-executive produced by Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson (who also co-stars) and show creator Courtney Kemp Agboh (“The Good Wife”). It’s a show that has managed to keep us at the edge of our seats after every single episode.
