In an America filled with MAGAs and White male politicians, good times can always take a turn for the worst. Check out this week’s winners below, then hit the flip for big losers.
Winners
Mom and Son Graduates
May is definitely one of those months that brings all the good feels.
Spring is on the horizon, prom dates are being chose, and graduation season is in full effect.
This past week, there was one graduation story that might have you grabbing all the tissue for its touching moment.
According to ABC12, Sharonda Love-Wilson was supposed to cross the stage at Ferris State University this past Saturday for her bachelor of science degree in business administration. However, her son Stephan was also receiving a diploma that same day at Central Michigan University.
The loving mother naturally decided to skip out on her own graduation to attend her son’s, saying she was “super excited” and “to know he was going to be singing at graduation and we were going to be able to sit in the president’s box…I was like oh we good.”
Little did the two know that they’d be basking in their educational excellence together. The CMU President Bob Davies started acknowledging graduates and when he called Stephan’s name, he arranged for his mom to walk towards him with a graduation cap in her hand.
Davies then started off by saying, “I made a call today to David Eisler at Ferris State University.”
He continued:
“On behalf of President Eisler and Ferris State Trustees, I confer upon you, Sharonda Wilson, the bachelor’s degree that you have earned with all rights. Please move your tassel from your right to your left.”
TOO MUCH.
Nothing like graduation season to bring out the winners…and the tears.
Losers
1. Racist promposal
With every happy graduation season moment, there always seems to be a racist somewhere who can’t help but be their racisty-racist self.
This was the case at Palos Verdes High School in Southern California when two White students held up a promposal sign reading, “Bianca, You are racist, but I could give anything for you to go with me to prom.” Certain letters in the proposal were capitalized and bolded to spell out the N-word.
Gross, gross, gross.
One of the Black students who posted the picture, Ryan Pascal (@ryanpascal_), followed up and said she was sending a letter to the principal demanding the school take action against the racist teens.
Eventually, the principal of the school, Dr. Allan Tyner, sent an email to parents, writing:
“We have been in touch with the identified students and their families to inform them that we are forming a response and anticipate severe consequences.”
In this same email, Tyner had the nerve to call the N-word “a slang term for African-Americans.” According to Pascal, he eventually sent a follow up email rightfully recognizing the word as a racial slur, however, he made no reference to labeling it a slang word earlier.
*Sigh*
The faculty and students definitely don’t seem to consider their Black population at Palos Verdes. According to NBC News, with a two percent Black population in the county, this isn’t surprising.
We’ll say it again and we’ll say it every year…
RACIST PROMPOSALS WILL ALWAYS BE TRASH.
2. Attacks on reproductive rights
Many women and anyone with a uterus were completely under attack this week.
According to NBC News, in Missouri, the Republican-led House passed a bill banning abortions after eight weeks of pregnancy with an exception to medical emergencies but not incest or rape. Under the bill, doctors who perform an abortion after the eight-week cutoff could possibly receive five to 15 years in prison.
In Alabama, Gov. Kay Ivey signed into law a ban on abortion from doctors during any stage of pregnancy. If they performed one, it would be considered a felony, and they also made no exceptions for rape or incest.
In Georgia, Gov. Brian Kemp signed into law bans on abortions once a fetal heartbeat can be detected, which can happen as early as six weeks before many women can even learn that they’re pregnant. This law gives exceptions when it comes to rape or incest.
Kentucky, Mississippi and Ohio have also approved abortion bans once fetal cardiac activity can be detected. Some of these laws have been challenged in court.
The rapid attack on people’s bodies sent a shockwave through social media with many activists slamming the anti-abortion laws and demanding reproductive justice.

Rihanna went even further and posted a pic of all the politicians responsible for the anti-abortion agenda. “Take a look. These are the idiots making decisions for WOMEN in America. Governor Kay Ivey…SHAME ON YOU!!!!,” she wrote.
Certain men also came out as allies like Chris Evans and Kamau Bell.

Clearly, there’s a lot of work to do considering this major L for the week, and people on the ground don’t plan on stopping anytime soon.
