Ask anyone born before 2000, and they’ll agree that the 90’s was such a special time for everyone. Television was booming with talent and filmmakers like Spike Lee and John Singleton who weren’t afraid to tell the raw truth about the issues plaguing the African American communities. The entertainment industry also had the creative license to do and say whatever they wanted no matter what demographic they offended — hence the reason we have films like American Pie.
Today marks the 20th anniversary of American Pie, the raunchy 1999 comedy that follows four teenage boys (played by Jason Biggs, Chris Klein, Thomas Ian Nicholas and Eddie Kaye Thomas) on a quest to lose their virginities before graduation. The movie was such a huge deal for young Americans when it hit theaters; but if watched by young adults today, they’d have a totally different reaction to some of those gruesome scenes.
Like the scene when Jason Biggs’ character sets up his computer camera to record the foreign exchange student changing her clothes, without her consent.
That’s a sexual crime lawsuit waiting to happen. With so many powerful, life changing movements shifting the climate today, (and a culture of people being offended by the smallest thing) there’s not much room to express oneself fully without offending someone. Obviously, we all need to be a bit more mindful of the content we put out, but hit the flip to check out scenes from films that just wouldn’t fly today.
Clueless
The amount of times Cher called something or someone retarded would certainly not fly these days. The R-word is considered greatly offensive to individuals with intellectual disabilities.
American Beauty
Ehhhhhh. Kevin Spacey as sexually frustrated father has a becoming infatuated with his daughter’s best friend? No thanks.
Dazed And Confused
Yes, Matthew Mcconaughey’s character did say “That’s what I love about these high school girls, man. I get older, they stay the same age.” Sounds too much like sexual assault.
Kids
Not only does the film highlight a bunch of teens roaming around New York City, drinking, doing drugs and having sex — one kid even knowingly infects virgins with the HIV virus. Nah.
Pulp Fiction
A Quentin Tarantino film of White Men saying the N-word. No thanks!
Boys Don’t Cry
Viewers would most definitely be outraged that instead of getting a real Trans actor to play the role of Brandon Teen, they casted a woman to do it. And she won an Oscar for it.
She’s All That
So the moral of this story is that is to not be yourself. In order for a girl to snag a guy, she has to be hot! Who cares if she’s smart and cultured, as long as she’s hot. SMH.
Poetic Justice
We live in a culture of “mind your own business”, but we are also in a time where our respect for women is of the highest importance. Black women Twitter would not be too pleased with the famous scene where Tupac sits back and watches as Regina King’s character get hit on by Guy Torry. Lucky didn’t jump in until Justice got involved. Not kewl.
Any Movie With A Token Black Kid With An Infinity For Sports Or Music
Honorable Mention:
I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry
The cringe-worthy gay jokes are enough to never watch this movie again.
The Love Guru
Mike Myers is an Indian Guru with a wild racist accent, giving faulty love advice. No thanks.
