You can’t be as big as Will Smith without taking a few L’s throughout your career.
While The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air star has had major critical and box office success throughout his career, the 51-year-old has also had some bombs.
A recent fail is his action thriller Gemini Man.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Ang Lee-directed movie faces a loss of $75 million or more after opening to $20.5 million domestically from October 11-13 and finishing Sunday with a worldwide gross of $118.7 million. The movie was made on a budget of around $140 million after tax rebates and incentives. It also took an additional $100 million-plus to market.
The movie follows Smith as an elite assassin who must face off against his younger self. Leading up to the release, anticipation was building, particularly because Lee made use of groundbreaking de-aging and high frame rate technology. However, when negative reviews started pouring in by late September, the movie’s momentum died down.
This isn’t the first time a Will Smith movie has bombed at the box office, and it’s not always because of negative reviews. His other 2019 release, Aladdin, received mixed reviews and ended up being his highest grossing worldwide movie ever.
Many of his other bombs could be because of bad marketing, bad storytelling or a variation of the two. Hit the flip to find out what five other Will Smith movies did worse than Gemini Man at the worldwide box office, according to Box Office Mojo.
1. Made In America (1993) – $104.9 million worldwide
This comedy movie starring Whoopi Goldberg, Ted Danson, Nia Long and yes, Will Smith didn’t fair well with critics.
And you’d think a movie about a Black daughter discovering she had a white sperm donor would bring in the bucks.
2. Collateral Beauty (2016) – $88.5 million worldwide
In this drama movie, Smith plays a man dealing with the tragedy of his daughter’s death by writing letters to time, death and love. Critics weren’t feeling it, considering a rough 14% on Rotten Tomatoes, and it seems the masses weren’t completely on board either.
3. Ali (2001) – $87.7 million worldwide
Here’s an example of a movie that resulted in critical acclaim on Smith’s part, even earning him an Oscar nomination for portraying the iconic boxer Muhammad Ali. However, it didn’t do well at the box office. In fact, according to Box Office Mojo, it lost money with a $87.7 million gross on a $107 million production budget.
4. Concussion (2015) – $48.6 million worldwide
This drama stars Smith as a forensic pathologist who takes on the National Football League trying to suppress his research on brain degeneration suffered by professional football players. Though the based-on-a-true-story narrative is interesting, it wasn’t the biggest of successes at the box office.
5. The Legend of Bagger Vance (2000) – $39.5 million worldwide
Finally, Smith’s worst performing movie at the box office is a movie where Smith plays a magical negro who helps a white alcoholic golf player (played by Matt Damon) redeem his career in 1931 Georgia.
It makes sense why this one performed badly.
