Jesus is walking into the classrooms of young Kentuckian students. The Kentucky Senate has approved new legislation allowing the Christian Bible to be studied in public schools. It has been submitted for House review and Sen. Joe Bowen is supporting this legislation 110 percent.

Bowden told a local news station that ‘No doubt about it, the most important book ever written and obviously, it’s had so much influence on our society and all of Western civilization.’

So is this political pandering or is this something that is needed? Do we need this in our schools? The bible has it’s place in the world, should it have it’s place in the clasroom also?

(Artist Jon McNaughton of Utah created a painting inspired by a vision he received during the 2008 elections. The painting — titled “One Nation Under God” — depicts Jesus surrounded by characters from American history plus Satan)

Whatever happened to the separation of Church and State? The concept of separation between church and state as written in Thomas Jefferson’s letter to the Danbury Baptists Association in 1802. The original text reads: ‘…I contemplate with sovereign reverence that act of the whole American people which declared that their legislature should ‘make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof,’ thus building a wall of separation between Church & State.’

It’s funny how most Republicans and right wing pundits always evoke the founding fathers and seem to think they wouldn’t approve of the state of our current government. But when it comes to something founders father directly opposed they turn a blind eye.

The bible has its place in Western civilization but we must uphold the idea of the separation of church and state. It is unfair to assume that the parents of the students want their children being educated on the bible. Should academic text from the bible be taught in school?
