From Homeless To Host: Terrence J On His Rise To The Top

The movie, based off of Steve Harvey’s book, revolves around a serious battle of the sexes and is one of the most anticipated romantic comedies to date!

With a superstar cast and some very dynamic men such as Michael Ealy, Chris Brown, Romany Malco, and Kevin Hart playing his on-screen homies, we are more than sure that these guys know how to woo the ladies!

Terrence took the time to sit down with GlobalGrind’s Sharon Carpenter to discuss the romantic comedy as the premiere date draws closer. Take a look at the exclusive interview below!

GlobalGrind: Let’s discuss Think Like A Man. What was it like on set?

Terrence J: It was the funniest experience of my life. Just getting the call sheet and it says ‘Today I’m doing a scene with Kevin Hart, Gabrielle Union, and Taraji P. Henson.’ Just all of these people I’ve been watching for years, and now to work with them, it was so much fun.

With the fellas, we got to play a lot of basketball together, a lot of fun in the gym. In between takes we were just hooping and having fun. We had an ongoing game of basketball, so we would just keep the total going from the day before. It was the funniest experience of my career.

Who’s the worst baller of the movie?

Who is the worst baller? [laughs] The most awkward baller I’ll say was Romany Malco, because he’s really athletic but he’s just very awkward on the basketball court!

What did you learn from the process of making the movie?

I’ve been in other movies before. I was in a film called Burlesque with Cher, I was in The Heart Specialist, one of the leads in Stomp the Yard 2, but when you take on those smaller roles and you just get three or four days on set, you can only learn so much. When you’re on set for a long amount of time like I did with this film and having a leading role, it opens up your eyes to everything. From the lighting and positioning, to your cues, to how to deliver your lines in different ways and then working with veteran actors like Michael Ealy – I was just learning and absorbing their energy. It was a tremendous learning curve.

What do you think the reception is going to be like?

People are going to love this film. This film is one of the highest tested movies in movie history. When they put together the focus group of kids and adults to watch this movie, they loved it.

When I was growing up in the ’80s and ’90s, we had an abundance of black love stories. We had Love Jones, we had Love & Basketball, Waiting to Exhale and Poetic Justice. All of these romantic tales, and then I would say for almost the past decade, we haven’t had any of those. I hope that we get back to the essence of that and I hope that this movie makes history.

What character do you play in the movie?

I play a character that goes by the name of Michael. Michael is a mama’s boy. The premise of this film is they’ve taken all of the different chapters and elements of Steve Harvey’s book and they broke them down into different men.

You’ve got one man who’s the player, one man who’s the mama’s boy, which is me, one man who’s a big dreamer but he doesn’t have a job, and then one man who’s a non-committer. You have these four imperfect guys and the women find out about the book and use it against the men, until the men find out that the women are using the book and we reverse it on them. It’s a game of cat and mouse and it’s just a really fun ride.
