The Fire Inside is the inspirational true story of Claressa Shields, arguably the greatest female boxer of all time. Claressa, a high school Junior from Flint, Michigan, aided by her tough-love coach, Jason Crutchfield, pushes past all limitations to become the first American woman to win an Olympic gold medal in boxing. But even at the pinnacle of success, Claressa has to reckon with the fact that not all dreams are created equal, and the real fight has only just begun.
Ryan Destiny (Star, Grown-ish) masterfully stars as Claressa Shields, while Academy Award nominee Brian Tyree Henry (Atlanta, Joker, Eternals, Bullet Train, Causeway) plays her coach Jason Crutchfield. The film also stars Judy Greer (What Women Want, 13 Going On 30, 27 Dresses), Oluniké Adeliyi (Saw 3D, Flashpoint), and De’Adre Aziza (The Breaks, She’s Gotta Have It, Run the World).
Academy Award nominated cinematographer Rachel Morrison makes her directorial debut in this unique sports story that goes beyond the triumph of the underdog to ask what comes after. The film was written by Academy Award winner Barry Jenkins (Moonlight, If Beale Street Could Talk) based on T-Rex by Zackary Canepari and Drea Cooper. Jenkins also produced the film alongside Elishia Holmes. In addition to Rachel Morrison, , Drea Cooper, Zackary Canepari, and Claressa Shields herself, Lyn Lucibello Brancatella and Sue Jaye Johnson took on executive producer responsibilities.
The highly anticipated film received a standing ovation at the Toronto International Film Festival (which is still currently taking place). It also recently debuted on Rotten Tomatoes with a 100% critics rating. We can expect to see the The Fire Inside in theaters this Christmas.
