'Sound Check with Jeremy Hecht' Ep. 3

UPROXX Studios’ new series is off to a hot start. DaBaby and G-Eazy graced the first two episodes and this week, the momentum continues. This time, DMV rap star Rico Nasty sat down with host  Jeremy Hecht for episode three of the weekly interview series revealing your favorite artist’s musical taste. Each high-stakes, 12-round episode features a carefully curated playlist of impossible choices, unearthing some never-before-heard stories and creative influences.

It wouldn’t be far fetched to say that all of today’s rap girlies were influenced or inspired by Nicki Minaj in some way or another and Rico fits in that category. She showed her vast knowledge of the Nick-tionary, proving she is one of the biggest Nicki fans in all of music. When prompted to pick between two of Nicki’s most recognizable songs in “Did It On Em” and “Super Bass” she responded “You know Ima go with Super Bass. It’s diamond…because of me probably. I know that song front to back.” Rico even gets Jeremy to sing along with her at one point in the segment.

The list of artists who impacted Rico’s career doesn’t end at Nicki though. According to her, two icons that have inspired her both visually and sonically are Missy Elliott and Avril Lavigne. Jeremy presented her with two classics, “Work It” by Elliott and “Sk8r Boi” by Lavigne. In what may have been a surprise to some, Rico picked the Canadian legend, stating “Everybody knows I love Missy Elliott, I’ve said it a million times, but I feel like specifically right now I’ve just been in a very angsty vibe, and I honestly feel like Avril has just been getting me through everything really.”

In the final round, Hecht flipped the script and turned the tables on himself by attempting to guess the track Rico says represents her entire life. Given two options—“Sextape” by Deftones and “Down By The Water: by The Drums—Hecht correctly guesses “Down By The Water.” When asked why she picked that song, Rico answers, “Anytime I’ve cried it was either to The Drums, or to like Radiohead or The Smiths. ‘Cause the way he’s singing is so like…it’s like he’s screaming it outside of her window.”
